GB3LF IRLP Node History

Summer 2003, Bob G3VVT asked me to explore the possibility of hooking GB3LF up to the IRLP network. I made enquiries to obtain an IRLP interface board from Canada. The cost of these are about £60. I also approached Mike G6PHF about obtaining a cheap PC p11-300 or so to run the Linux operating system. Mike said he could find me one. The project was put on the backburner due to problems with my 802.11b internet link via Mike G6PHF.

October 2003, my local exchange has reached the required level of registrations to enable it for ADSL.

November 2003, I take out a 512/256 ADSL connection from Eclipse Internet. I order a router and my ADSL is installed. I make enquiries to the UK IRLP group about obtaining an IRLP board for the node. Steve M1ERS informs me that there is a redundant IRLP PC belonging to G0FUO which he wants to sell. This is ideal because it has the IRLP interface board installed and has Red Hat Linux 6.2 IRLP already installed. All I have to do is pay G0FUO for the PC bring it home and alter the configuration files to reflect the new callsign of GB3LF. This is done by the end of December.
I then have to modify the PYE MX296 UHF Link Radio to obtain a COS (ctcss operated squelch) signal to drive the IRLP board. Also I have to make up a PTT interface for the MX296. I then made more modifications to the Tone Decoder board for the MX296 to give 2 LEDS displaying the COS state and TX state.

Jan 2004. The IRLP node is put into operation in early Jan 2004

Feb 2004, I make more alterations to the MX296 with the addition of an audio amp to increase the line level into the IRLP pc, and a modification to the MX296 Mic i/p circuit to allow it to be driven with line level audio from the IRLP pc (0.775V).

23 Feb 2004 I have upgraded the Internet connection to 1Mbits ADSL.

29 Apr 2004 I updated the Linux operating system to Red Hat 9 and reinstalled NTP to keep the clock synchronised to an accurate time server. I also reinstalled apt-get and sccw to get the CWID working.

October 2005 My ADSL connection is upgraded to 2048/256

April 2006 EchoIRLP installed.

December 2007 My ADSL connection is upgraded to 8128/832 .
